The Irish Limousin Cattle Society will be located at block one, row 19, stand number 431. Limousin society staff and council members will be on hand to welcome you, answer queries and provide advice. There will also be an array of pedigree prizewinning Limousins on display, featuring numerous first prizewinners from the society’s national show, which was held in conjunction with the International Limousin Congress 2016, and a sample of successful Limousin commercial cattle also.

Irish Limousin continues to command a strong pedigree position with an average of 9,000 calves registered annually and approximately 2,400 members.

With these numbers, the Limousin stands as the number one beef breed in Ireland today, due to the versatility of the breed.

It also occupies the number one suckler cow position and is the number one continental breed used on dairy cows. Add the number one beef AI sire to this list and now you can see why a visit to the stand for any cattle enthusiast is a must.

Easy-calving sires

One programme which the society has embarked on is the Limoshortgest to identify short gestation, easy-calving sires to target growth in the dairy market. Participating dairy farmers were hugely satisfied with the quality of calves born and premium prices received. These Limousin-sired calves had an average gestation of 284 days and were easily calved.

Due to the positive results and feedback, there has been a huge uptake in the programme again this year. Information will be available on the Limoshortgest initiative at the stand, along with committee members to discuss the programme in more detail.

After a very successful International Congress, eyes now go on to the autumn sales season. This kicks off in Roscrea with the premier male and female sale on bank holiday Monday, 31 October. The final sale of 2016 will then be held in Tullow on 16 November.
