From 5 March 2018, all knackeries will be required by law to notify the Department of Agriculture the ID number of all bovine carcases taken in by them from farms within seven days.
Knackeries will have to notify the tag number to the Department’s traceability database. Pat Farrell, IFA animal health chair, said at the start of the BVD Programme it came to light that some knackeries were not notifying a death to the Department until farmers cleared their accounts with the knackery.
“In the main, the majority of knackeries were compliant with notifying the Department within reasonable time frames, but a handful of knackeries were not as efficient.
“This legislation finally resolves the issue.”
