The Show was held on the picturesque grounds of Strokestown House. This was the final outing for many exhibitors across the various breeds, and last Saturday’s show saw an impressive display of pedigree and commercial beef cattle.

Beef Shorthorn

Noel Dowd’s senior cow Creaga Gypsy took the breed championship while John and Jonathan Keane of Kilfenora, Co Clare, took reserve with their February 2015-born heifer Bushypark Cherry. Bushypark Cherry earlier claimed the All-Ireland intermediate heifer championship. Ballinlig Twinkle claimed the reserve All-Ireland junior heifer title for Terry and Amanda Middleton, Moate, Co Westmeath.

The Irish Angus society held their All-Ireland championship at the show, with a total prize fund of €10,000. Winners in the various age sections were as follows:

Under-13s: Niall Regan of Castelrea, Co Roscommon. Over-13s and under-18s: Michelle Farrell of Curraghroe, Co Roscommon. Over-18s and under-25s: Christopher O’Connor of Elphin, Co Roscommon.

Results

Society president Michael Cronin had the judging honours for the day, with an entry of over 140 Angus cattle. Below are the results from the day:

All-Ireland senior cow: Luddenmore Rosa Erica J042 for Denis Twomey of Causeway, Co Kerry.

All-Ireland cow or heifer: Clooncolligan Kara for Kevin Diffley of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. Reserve was Kerins Kemi for Bernard Kerins, Ballymote, Co Sligo.

All-Ireland heifer: Ashtown Katie for Michael and Niamh Barron of The Rower, Co Kilkenny. Reserve was Powerstown Linda for Joseph and Michael Moran of Gorestown, Co Kilkenny.

All-Ireland yearling heifer: Cloghogue Eldorado P112 for Edmund and Betty O’Carroll, Castlebaldwin, Co Sligo. Reserve went to Dillon Lexi for John and Cathy Farrell of Curraghroe, Co Roscommon.

All Ireland weanling heifer: Owenmore Milly for Anthony Scanlon, Ballymote, Co Sligo. Reserve was Bunlahy Molly Bell for G A & D Reynolds of Ballinalee, Co Longford.

All-Ireland senior heifer calf: Tubridmore Missy for Denis Twomey of Causeway, Co Kerry. Reserve was Bunlahy Matilda Bell for G A & D Reynolds of Ballinalee, Co Longford.

All-Ireland junior heifer calf champion: Kilkelly Miss Tulip for WJ O’Grady, Kilkelly, Co Mayo. Reserve went to Mercury Miss Flora for Shane and John Murphy of Banteer, Co Cork.

Exhibitors in these classes were subject to a weighting and animals in excess of a 1.5kg DWG with a 40kg birth weight were not eligible for the above All-Ireland classes.

Bull champions

All-Ireland intermediate bull champion: Berry Lord for Patrick Murphy of Athlone, Co Roscommon. Reserve went to Currycamp Lukas for Gerard Mulligan of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

All-Ireland yearling bull champion: Steil Larry 269 for Cathal and JJ McCormack of Castlerea, Co Roscommon. Reserve went to Clooncolligan Lieutenant for Kevin Diffley of Bornacoola, Co Leitrim.

All-Ireland weanling bull champion: Mercury Lord Jet for Shane and John Murphy of Banteer, Co Cork. Reserve was Knockadrinan Blackman R601 for Tom Reynolds of Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

All-Ireland senior bull calf champion: Millbawn Majestic for Amanda Bogan and Conor Craig, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford. Reserve went to Lodgetown Max for Dermot Kilcrann of Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon.

All-Ireland junior bull calf champion: Aughnamona Mannai for Geraldine Shanley and Donal Spring from Carrick-on-Shannon. Reserve was Bunlahy Myles for G A & D Reynolds of Ballinalee, Co Longford.

Again, the entries in these bull classes were subject to a DWG of 1.7kg plus a birth weight of 45kg.

Charolais champion: Martin Clyne of Coolary, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, with his Heifer. Reserve went to Anthony Bosquette, Strokestown, Co Roscommon, again with a heifer.

Limousin champion: Owen Hester, Meelickaduff, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, with his December 2012-born heifer Meelickaduff Honda, sired by Wilodge Vantastic out of a French dam Etole. Reserve for the Limousin breed was a yearling bull for Tom Bailey of Batterstown, Co Meath.

Belgian blue champion: James and Siobhan Ronan Bekan, Claremorris, Co Mayo, with their January 2015-born heifer calf. Reserve went to Sean McGarry with his October 2014-born heifer calf.

Simmental judging

The Progressive Genetics young handlers class got Simmental judging underway. Judge Sharon Rothwell of Tinahely put the youngsters through their paces. James Kelly, Ballynacally, Ennis, Co Clare, was the eventual winner, having really impressed the judge with his knowledge of cattle. Sarah Murray, Moate, Co Westmeath, stood in second place, while James O’Leary of Ballincollig, Co Cork, took third place.
