Case IH

Case IH has announced upgrades to two of its round balers. The combination RB 545 Silage Pack fixed-chamber round baler now includes improved front hood access when changing net and film and stronger rotor cutter knives. A configurable blank knife option and longer wrapper table belts are also included in the upgrades.

The RB455 variable chamber round baler also benefits from a 2018 upgrade. This includes a dual density option, while a new rotor design on the rotor-cutter models improves durability. Tine thickness has increased from 6mm to 8mm and inter-tine spacing is up from 8mm to 10mm. A new net wrapper design features a new net knife to improve cut quality. Bale shape fill sensor sensitivity has also been improved, as has the in-cab display.

John Deere is introducing a complete range of new V400 series variable chamber round balers for the 2018 season, to replace the existing 800 and 900 Series models

John Deere V400 series

John Deere is introducing a complete range of new V400 series variable chamber round balers for the 2018 season to replace the existing 800 and 900 series models. These high-capacity balers have been designed to work in all crop conditions from wet grass to dry brittle straw.

Key features include an extra-heavy-duty welded frame, a feeding system with a larger diameter pickup and one-piece in-line auger rotor for improved intake and crop flow. Heavier duty components such as bigger drive chains, oversize roller bearings, a new bale density tension system and Hardox steel rotor tines have also been incorporated in the new designs. The V451G is a basic specification, entry level baler primarily for use in hay and straw, while the mid-specification V451M and V461M multi-crop balers are ideal for medium- to high-volume use.

The V451R and V461R balers have been designed to meet the high-output requirements of contractors and larger farms. As introduced on the 900 series round balers in 2012, the Fast Release System (FRS), in combination with the high capacity intake rotor, is capable of producing more than 140 bales per hour, according to John Deere.

The Massey Ferguson RB2125FPR features a pickup width of 2.25m, mechanically-locked chamber and a 1.5m chamber.

MF is a new multinational in the round baler market but its product is familiar to a lot of farmers and contractors. As seen by the Irish Farmers Journal at LAMMA earlier this year, the Lely Welger balers have been re-launched in MF colours. As part of AGCO’s strategy, the balers will also be available in Fendt livery. The fixed chamber range is available with a 2.0-2.25m pickup. Recommended minimum tractor power is 70hp to power the baler. Balers with Xtracut bale chopper can be equipped with 13, 17 or 25 knives depending on customer preference, with the option to disengage all knives completely. Hydroflexcontrol allows for the bale chamber floor to be lowered in the case of a blockage. Mechanical locking is used on the real tailgate, ensuring accurate bale density.

The Pottinger Impress round baler is available in both fixed and variable chamber models with two different specification levels.

Pöttinger Impress fixed and variable chamber round baler

A relatively new entrant to the Irish baler market is Austrian manufacturer Pöttinger. The company has launched both a fixed and variable chamber baler. Depending on customer preference, there is a master and a pro version. The master has a 2.0metre pickup with 120mm lateral movement for undulating ground surfaces. Its cutting rotor has 16 knifes on a rotating shaft to adjust the number of knives in work. These are on a knife bank system which is located above the baler pickup as opposed to underneath in most other balers. According to Pöttinger, this has the advantage of easier maintenance as the blades are at a more user-friendly height for servicing. For extended working life, the baler is fitted with twin-blade reversible knives. A 650mm spiral rotor feeds the crop across the full width of knife bank so there is no “bunching” of material from the sides of the pickup. The baler uses a 540 PTO and wheel brakes as standard. The pro version has 32 knifes which give a 36mm chop length from the 2.3m pickup. This baler is driven with a 1000 RPM PTO. The machine is controlled using Isobus and load sensing hydraulics. Auto greasing is also available to reduce maintenance time. Pöttinger will also have their Impress Combi baler-wrapper available for demonstration this year. It will be officially introduced at this year’s FTMTA Grass and Muck. The tandem axle baler is a new player in the baler-wrapper combination market with a limited number of units available for 2018.

The Kverneland Fastbale can bale continiously bale thanks to its two-chamber design meaning wrapped bales of silage are made without stopping.

Kverneland Fastbale continuous round baler

Kverneland Ireland has seen interest in its non-stop fixed-chamber round baler-wrapper combination grow since its introduction to the market. A constant forward speed can be maintained on the Fastbale without having to stop to allow the bale move from the chamber to the wrapping table. Kverneland claims baling non-stop saves 15-18 seconds per bale without compromising on quality. The addition of film-on-film baling and wrapping means the Fastbale is the only non-stop baler on the market with this possibility.

The Kuhn FBP 3135 baler uses film-on-film technology and a unique wrapping system to apply film to the outer edges of the bale.

Kuhn Intelliwrap FBP 3135

As launched at Agritechnica last year, the tandem axle round baler is now available with film-on-film and 3D wrapping system. Two 750mm rolls of stretch-film wrap the bale in place of net in the chamber. The advantage of the 3D system which finishes the wrapping outside the chamber is it can be programmed to cover the corners of the bales very well, allowing savings to be made on the overall wrapping. The saving according to Kuhn is about 30%.

The Claas Uniwrap baler is now available with film-on-film technology. Net wrapped baler-combi's are still available.

Claas film-on-film round baler

Following market trends, Claas is now offering a film-on-film option on its Rolland 454 Uniwrap baler. The baler comes with a 25-knife chopping rotor and drop-floor in case of blockages. The film in place of the net is loaded from the ground with a user-friendly cradle system. The single-axle design is fitted with 620 55/26.5 tyres. Claas still offer net and plastic baler-wrapper combinations.
