Officially launched over one year ago, John Deere’s Milk Sustainability Center (MSC) is a digital platform, created with DeLaval, to help dairy farmers in a whole-system approach.

It is designed to track and improve farmers’ environmental performance by combining animal and crop data into one place, focusing on nutrient use and carbon footprint to increase profitability and sustainability.

How does it work?

The system focuses on data integration- pulling data from various farm software such as milking, feeding and herd management etc, into a single platform. As a result, it provides a complete picture of farm operations, linking field and shed data. It calculates nutrient use efficiency for nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and carbon dioxide equivalent.

It identifies nutrient losses, recommends best practices and allows for scenario simulations to see the impact of changes.

At the event, John Deere and DeLaval announced the expansion of the system to dairy farmers in more countries and welcomed DSM-Firmenich as the next strategic partner. Its software, Sustell, is a leading lifecycle assessment solution that helps the agricultural industry measure and improve sustainability performance.

This partnership will allow primary data to flow from MSC to the Sustell software. This will enhance MSC functionality with extra Sustell data sources and certified carbon footprint calculations.

The MSC is designed to serve dairy farmers, independent of their machinery brands, feeding technology, milking equipment brands, or herd management software. It is now available in 13 countries, including Ireland.
