Friday 12 December saw the usual high calibre of prime cattle on show at the weekly beef sale held in Keady Mart in Co Armagh.

A smaller attendance at the ringside certainly didn’t hold prices back, with 50% of lots receiving online bids and subsequently being sold online.

Strong prices and a 100% clearance rate very much reflected the quality of stock on offer.

Commenting after the sale, mart manager Brian McKeown pointed out that 60% of cattle sold for prices above 380p/kg.

“That is substantially higher than factory quotes,” he said.

Analysis of the trade shows that 33% of animals sold for over 400p/kg to a top price of 593p/kg.

The higher prices per kilogramme weren’t just paid for lighter stock.

A substantial number of animals weighing over 700kg broke the 400p/kg barrier.

The top price on the day was £3,180 (410p/kg) which was paid for a 775kg Charolais bullock, while a 760kg Limousin made £3,090 (406p/kg).

A pen of spring 24 Friesian bulls weighing 415kg to 515kg made £1,300 to £1,600, to average 320p/kg, while a pen of August-born Limousin weanlings made 580p to 590p/kg.

Keady and Camlough Marts are operated by South Armagh Farming Enterprises (SAFE). The next Camlough Mart cattle sale is on a Wednesday 7 January at 10.30am, with Keady on Friday 9 January at noon.
