Friday the 13th didn’t bring any bad luck for farmer sellers at the weekly beef sale at Keady mart.

A smaller-than-usual sale saw 98 lots presented with a clearance rate of 100%. According to mart manager Brian McKeown there aren’t enough cattle coming forward to meet demand, especially in the store ring. “The numbers just don’t seem to be out there,” he said.

Ringside competition last Friday was strong and bolstered by online activity, with 50% of lots receiving online bids and 27% of lots being sold online. “Beef cattle were up in price on the previous week, with mart prices being way ahead of factory quotes,” McKeown added.

Top price of the day was £3,480 (341p/kg) paid for an impressive 1,020kg, March 2023-born Charolais bullock. Following that was an April 2024-born Charolais bullock, weighing 930kg, which sold for £3,360 (361p/kg).

Limousins took the highest prices per kg with two 680kg bullocks, both born April 2024, fetching £2,780 (408p/kg) and £2,770 (407p/kg). Assuming both animals are going on for further feeding, excellent weight gain and a significant lift in beef prices will be required to leave a margin.
