The Irish Salers Cattle Society's decision to host its 2026 spring sale in the form of an online timed auction proved a wise one last week, as the record price for a Salers bull in Ireland was broken twice.
Having held its sales in marts prior to this, the society decided to conduct this year's sale online through MartEye and Mid-Tipp Mart.
Eight out of the 11 animals cataloged sold, consisting of five bulls and three heifers.
Trade for bulls was particularly strong, as they averaged €5,703, with the three heifers retailing to an average of €3,083.
Record breakers
Spiddal Dad was the first lot to close and he set the scene for things to come, selling for a breed record of €8,000.
Bred by Peatsai O'Conghaile from Co Galway, this December 2024-born bull was one of the stand-out lots in the lead-up to the sale. Sired by Manusmore Bradley, his dam Spiddal Nell is a daughter of the great French sire Jovial.
As well as displaying all the hallmarks of a special Salers bull, he also offered buyers a five-star replacement index of €175 and well-below average calving figures. Securing this promising young bull for its AI stud in Co Tippearary was Dovea Genetics.

The previous breed record was crossed once again, when Niall Hunt from Co Sligo received €6,300 for Templeboy Diablo.
Dark red in color, this powerful October 2024-born bull is a son of Bronson and the Manclaux-bred cow Templeboy Blathnaid, which in turn is a daughter of the herd's prolific breeding cow Opale.
Although ranking in the bottom 20% of the Salers breed across replacement and terminal, he had plenty of customers pressing the button, selling to David Boyd from Northern Ireland.
Females
All three females which sold came from the herd of Garreth McCormack in Co Cavan.
Leading proceedings at €3,300 was the rising 14-month-old heifer Skeagh Emerald, a high-index daughter of Highfield Odran and the Beguin-bred cow Skeagh Uma.
Packing a replacement index of €217 and a dairy-beef index of €151, she was the pick of Barry Flynn.
