The US National Farmers Union has called on the government to come up with a clear definition of the word ‘meat’ in order to help consumers know the difference between animal products and products created from proteins created in a laboratory.

In a letter to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) last week, the union president urged officials to create a clearer definition in order to avoid mislabelling foods as meat which have been created using animal cell culture.

This call follows on from French authorities banning products which are not partly or wholly made up of meat from being labelled with meat terms such as ‘steak’ or ‘sausage’, earlier this year.
