The early general election called by British prime minister Theresa May is expected to give her government a landslide majority – if opinion polls are correct.

Given the unexpected outcomes of elections recently, there is a very remote possibility of the pro-EU Liberal Democrats picking up sufficient votes to scupper the prime minister’s ambitions.

An Conservative government elected with an increased majority will strengthen May’s negotiating position on Brexit.

This can work in two ways: she will engage with the EU supported by a stronger mandate and will also be able to confront the more extreme views within her own party on what represents a good deal.

Farm leaders will have a big challenge in making agriculture an issue for the electorate.
