Will and Gareth Corrie, who run dairy and suckler cows, beef fattening and farm butchery near Newtownards, sold the suckler cow part of their operation in Ballymena last week.
All stock were high-quality Limousins in great condition and all guaranteed in calf from mid-February. Auctioneer Graham Loughery had no difficulty in getting bids from the 1,000-plus crowd packed in the sale ring.
The cows were capable of breeding E and U grade cattle. To show the quality of the stock, a bunch of 11 calves born last March were sold. They weighed from 370kg to 420kg; they averaged 396kg and made from 236p;kg to 276p/kg and averaged 260p/kg, or £1,030 a head.
Heifers and cows
Suckler heifers made, on average, £2,050 a head, with a top price of £3,700 for a black April 2012-born heifer.
The next best was £2,900 for a similar black April 2012 born. A further 10 heifers made from £2,000 to £2,450 each.
Cows sold very well with a top price of £2,800 for a black April 2010-born; £2,500 for March 2007-born; and £2,300 for a November 2003-born. A total of 17 cows made from £2,000 to £2,200 a head. Overall, 78 cows sold to average £1,830 a head.
Three Limousin stock bulls were also sold, all well-bred and now six and seven years old. They made £3,000, £3,200 and £4,000, with the latter, Wellhouse Elm, a Objat son, selling to pedigree Limousin breeder Sam Coleman of Glarryford.

Details Taaffe TN 00535 41 988 1288.With the downturn in milk prices, it is no surprise that dairy farmers were in a cautious mood at the dispersal sale of cows for Carryduff-based Mervyn McKeown through the ring in Ballymena Mart.
The herd of commercial Holsteins and Friesians was bred with Genus semen in recent years and had been pregnancy diagnosed in calf in October and December. There were some Montbeliardes born in 2007 and 2008.
Young cows and heifers made the best prices with top prices of £1,450, £1,430, £1,400 (twice) and £1,300.
A number of stock made £1,250, including three of the older Montbeliardes; and a big run of cows from £900 to £1,200 a head. Overall, almost 120 head averaged £970 each.
