  • It was a case of quality over quantity at Cavan last week, where a small renewal delivered a very satisfactory set of returns. Just sixty-seven lots passed through the ring over the course of the day, but among them were four individuals who sold for in excess of €10,000. These and others contributed to a healthy overall average of €6,244 (€6,237 in 2022) and as trade buyers dominated the proceedings, the clearance closed at a respectable 69% (63% in 2022).

    SALE TOPPER

Featuring among several well-produced horses with form, Grace O’Connor’s Westphalian bred Nablensky headed the days figures at €14,500. Although bred in Germany, the six-year-old son of Cornet Obolensky (dam by Nabab de Reve) had been competing in Ireland for two years, and with his Claregalway based owner had racked up 32 SJI points. It was a sad sale for O’Connor, but she will have been pleased to note that the buyer was British resident Robert Stronge, who is well known as a discerning judge. “As nice a horse I’ve seen here for a long time,” commented Newbury resident Stronge. “He has enough jump to continue down the road he’s on, and also enough quality to event.”

    NOTABLES

Another well presented individual was Karl White’s five-year-old Alderford Gold, a gelding by Luidam out of the Irish Draught mare White Gold (by Ard Grandpa). Bred by Peter Healy and produced by John Mulligan, he caught the eye of Northern Ireland trader Mark Reid who eventually signed the docket at €13,200.

Commercial buyers were the main customers on the day, and it was the British based Caron Nicol (European Sport Horses) who at €12,200 accounted for Willie Lapsley’s useful performer Altaskin Absolute. A versatile sort, with hunting and show jumping form (46 SJI points), he was a six-year-old by Dr No Equinex Z (by Diamant de Semilly) out of a thoroughbred mare by Seabrook.

Although making the headlines, the top prices did not fall exclusively to the competition horses. In keeping with recent trends, there was a strong demand for quiet riding horses and one to stand out at €10,000 was Wilson Equestrian’s Smokey, a coloured gelding with no recorded breeding. Well marketed by Wilson prior to sale, Smokey was knocked down to Ballinasloe based trader Laura Geraghty.

    PONIES.

Opening the day’s business, the ponies set the ball rolling with several notable returns. Five lots realised in excess of €5,000 with Michael Shanahan’s five-year-old mare Pretty Penny picking up the day’s top return of €8,100. Durrow buyer Robert Hovenden signed the docket for this lot who was by Hans out of Doiran Beauty (Rosmuc Rebel).

    YOUNGER STOCK

Although the trade was not as lively as the remainder of the age groups, Thomas Murray’s homebred four-year-old headed the session at a healthy €9,600. By an unknown stallion out of an Ard VDL Douglas mare, the gelding was secured by trader Mark Reid. Later in the division, Wilson Equestrian added to their good day at the office when their traditionally bred Jimmy by Dunbeggan Coevers Hill was knocked down to British dealer Mandy Gray for €8,800.

The younger age group fared less well, with the top return of €5,600 going to Hamilton Wilson’s homebred Montalto Candy Kid.

A son of Sligo Candy Boy out of a thoroughbred dam, he looked well bought by the Summerhill based Trade Horses Ltd.
