The 2015 Celtic Sires-Sponsored National Simmental Calf Finals took place in Strokestown last Saturday.

In total, 48 calves were catalogued and the judge was Sharon Rothwell from the Greenhall Herd in Tinahely, Co Wicklow.

First up was the senior heifer calf class for calves born December 2014 and January 2015. Taking the honours were the Neenan brothers, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo, with Fearna Gucci sired by Anatrim Bodybuilder. Born in January 2015, she is out of Herkules dam Fearna Destiny, Supreme Simmental Champion at the Tullamore Show. Reserve went to Tony O’Leary, Ballincollig, Co Cork, with Seaview Gabby.

The national senior bull title went to James Browne, Glanworth, Co Cork, with his Hillcrest Champion-sired Corbally Gino. This January 2015 bull calf is out of the Raceview King-sired dam Corbally Vintage Katie. Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise, took the reserve with Clonagh Foot Loose Willow.

The junior bull calf class was taken by Derek Costello, Killineer, Drogheda, with Barnattin George. Born in February 2015, this Kilbride Farm Delboy-sired bull is out of Barnattin Winnie, a Raceview Tiger cow. Reserve went to Clonagh General Almighty, exhibited by Garrett Behan.

The junior heifer class was won by Lochview Gael Homemaker, exhibited by Pat McNamee, The Heath, Portlaoise. This five-month-old calf is sired by Curaheen Tyson and is out of a Brington Brilliant dam, Celtic Homemaker. The reserve went to Philomena Galligan, Carrickbanagher, Co Sligo, with Carrickview Grace.
