“Satellites go over every piece of land in the EU every five days,” Tassos Haniotis from the European Commission told the IFA in Dublin on 17 January. Haniotis, director of strategy, simplificaton and policy in DG Agriculture, was speaking about changes to on-farm regulations in the next round of CAP.
“I think we clearly need less regulation from Brussels,” Haniotis said.
The Commission has indicated that compliance with farm schemes is set to involve more satellites and fewer on-the-ground inspections.
Haniotis also said he would like to see a fairer distribution of support between farmers, but that “fair was in the eye of the beholder,” and warned that big farmers were likely to experience more pressure in the next CAP.
