Kenmare Men’s Shed was one of the first sheds established in south Kerry. Members see it as a weekly ritual of socialising and sharing skills in friendly surroundings. Donal Whelton, now its chair, has been a part of the club since the beginning and describes it as a place where “people from all different backgrounds gel together”.
Finding a suitable premises has been the big challenge for the Kenmare men. They operated out of the Family Resource Centre in Kenmare for a few years, but this premises was unsuitable for a workshop. Eventually following discussion with Kenmare Mart and its committee they managed to acquire a space in the mart to set up in.
“The manager Dan McCarthy agreed to allow us adapt the empty space under the stands which we are very thankful for,” says Donal.
“We make a lot of small things from timber. A few of our members are very crafty. Last Christmas we made candle holders and other small decorations, which we sold in the local SuperValu, which generated income for the shed.”
Donal says that while some members love working with their hands, there is no pressure on anyone to pick up a tool. “Lads can come down for a cup of tea and chat, if they want.”
Although the men are happily accommodated in the mart, Donal stressed that their space is not large enough to facilitate a large crowd and they hope in the near future they will be able to acquire their own premises closer to the town
“Anyone is welcome here, no matter what their background is. We are very keen to have new ideas and skills brought in to broaden the appeal of the group.”
The shed is open every Friday afternoon from 2pm until 4pm. If you are interested in joining or looking for more information, contact Donal Whelton on 087 2469657.
