Last week’s sale in Ballymote and Saturday’s sale in Mohill Mart saw a slight improvement across bullocks, heifers and weanlings. There was much more buyers around the ring and cattle sold a lot easier. The quality of stock on offer has started to slip, with top-quality store cattle and weanlings in shorter supply. The demand for in-calf heifers and cows with calves at foot has been somewhat mixed, with prices ranging from €1,200 to €1,600 for in-calf heifers. To get the higher prices, quality and milk are essential. Cull cows have been firm, with fleshed cows still making as much if not more at the ring than on the hook.
