The Irish Farmers Journal Thrive demonstration farm near Cashel, Co Tipperary has purchased over 140 calves this spring. Here we chat with local vet Tom Julian about general signs of a healthy calf.

Once calves are purchased and settled on farm it is then time to think about vaccination. In this video Tom outlines the importance of minimising the stress levels of calves in the first few days on farm. Sometimes farmers rush in with a vaccine as soon as calves arrive on farm – thinking it is the best approach to maintain calf health. However, Tom suggests that vaccination should only be considered once the calf is settled into its new environment.

Finally we speak about a clostridial vaccination, timings, and the importance of the second ‘booster’ shot to maximise immunity. This is a cost effective vaccination and can save needless losses in the system. Remember, calves need two shots to maximise immunity and all stock should receive a one shot booster vaccine annually.
