The Northern Ireland club of the British Limousin Cattle Society hosted its spring sale on bank holiday Monday, recording an 89% clearance for bulls and 100% clearance for heifers.

These impressive clearance rates were matched with strong averages. In total, 39 bulls sold to average 3,635gns, while all eight females sold to an average of 2,650gns.

The averages were up 354gns for males and 769gns for females on last year.

Securing a top price of 6,500gns was Ballyrobin Rockstar. Bred by Joan Gilliland, this stylish January 2020-born bull was secured by Dessie Magee, Co Down.

Sired by Ampertaine Magnum and out of a homebred first-calver by Lowerffydd Empire, Rockstar carried one copy each of the F94L and Q204X myostatin variants.

Next in line at 5,500gns was Aghadolgan Rasputin from Mr RAG Savage, Drumahoe, Co Derry.

This February 2020-born bull is by Ampertaine Jeronimo, with Sympa on the dam’s side. Carrying two copies of the F94L gene, he was knocked down to Armagh-based John Robinson.

At 5,000gns was Newhillfarm Paddy from Messrs M&J McPolin from Newry, Co Down.

This Goldies Jackpot son is out of Kaprico Eravelle daughter Newhillfarm Maria. Born November 2019, he was the choice of J F Savage & Partners in Newtownards.

The aforementioned Ampertaine Magnum was also the sire behind Millwood Rampage. This bull was bred and exhibited by Messrs C & R Robinson from Co Tyrone and has Ampertaine Foreman and Wilodge Cerberus in the dam’s pedigree. Catching the eye of Mr R McNabney from Ballymena, he met his reserve at 4,900gns.

AI services Northern Ireland was in buying form, forking out 4,800gns for Slieve Pochettino from Messrs S & J McGeehan, Fivemiletown. This December 2019-born bull is sired by Trueman Idol, with Vantastic and Ampertaine Commander also in the lineage.

Securing a final bid of 4,600gns was Ballyhoe Rameo from Mr B Hall, Co Antrim. This double F94L carrier was born January 2020 and sired by Whinfellpark Lomu. Out of a daughter of Otan, he was knocked down to local buyer V N Fleck.

Females

In the heifer section, J & A Callion had top-priced female at 4,200gns. Melbreak Rennes is sired by Attila, who is a son of Pacha and out of a Wilodge Vantastic dam.

This September 2020-born heifer was the youngest female offered for sale on the day and was picked by John O’Kane for his Gleneagle Herd in Coleraine.

The second top female price of €3,000 was hit on two occasions.

First at the money was Killydun Perrie from the Quinn brothers, Kilrea. This December 2018-b0rn in-calf heifer was by Netherhall Jackpot with the dam bred in the Goldies herd in Scotland.

Matching the price was Rathkeeland Riley from the Crawford brothers. This 15-month-old heifer is a daughter of Ironstone Gandi and Plumtree Fantastic-sired cow Rathkeeland Nellie.
