Quality was king at Tuesday’s weanling sale in Ennis, Co Clare.
Speaking to mart manager Martin McNamara after the sale, he said that “quality is very variable at the moment, but the good-quality lots are still holding a very good trade”.
Overall, there was a lively trade in the heifer ring, with prices up €20 to €50 per head for the week, buoyed by a larger farmer presence around the ring.
In the bull ring, trade was stiffer, with prices back €30 to €50 per head.
According to Martin, there was a little bit more activity from the shippers this week in the bull ring, but they are also quite price conscious.
“They’re back €50 a head on what they were spending a month ago,” said Martin.
Numbers in the sale were back significantly on previous weeks, with 800 booked in for sale. This included over 350 weanling and yearling bulls and 175 weanling heifers.
