Last week’s special weanling bull sale at Mohill Mart saw a large entry of over 600 cattle on offer. Mart manager Stephen Hannon said that the sale was mostly dominated by farmer demand. However, there was an abundance of feeders and exporters present and active also.
Stephen said that some of the best prices on a per-kilo basis were for some of the lighter bulls on offer. He said that a small group of bulls from 245kg to 310kg came to mind which sold from €845 for the lighter one to €990 for 310kg. On a price-per-kilo basis, this translated to prices of €3.20/kg to €3.45/kg.
Lighter types from 200kg to 250kg sold mainly from €400 to €500 along with the weight, with top-quality types making €500 to €600 along with the weight.
Those from 250kg to 300kg sold mainly from €450 to €500 over the weight, with top-quality types making from €520 to €600 over the weight.
For lighter types, farmers and exporters were the main buyers and for those from 300kg to 400kg also. Those from 300kg to 350kg sold from €2.60/kg to €2.80/kg, with top-quality types making from €3.00/kg to €3.30/kg or up to €720 along with the weight.
Stephen said that bulls from 350kg to 400kg sold from €2.60/kg to €2.70/kg for average-quality types, with a large proportion making from €950 to €1,050. Better-quality types sold from €2.90/kg to €3.10/kg or up to €1,240/head.
There was a good entry of bulls from 400kg to 450kg on offer. Again, farmers were active, with some feeders active for good-quality types also.
Bulls in that weight range sold mainly from €600 to €680 along with the wight for average-quality types and for up to €845 over the weight, which was paid for a 400kg bull which sold for €1,245 or €3.11/kg.
Feeders were very active for all good-quality heavy bulls, with those from 450kg to 500kg selling mainly from €620 to €660 over the weight, with top-quality U grade bulls making from €700 to €835 along with the weight.
Those from 500kg to 550kg sold mainly from €660 to €700 over the weight, with €1,340 paid for a top-quality 530kg Charolais bull.
Commission rates are 2% to the seller and €9 to the buyer with an entry fee of €2/head.
