Ireland has two new European champions. Rhys Williams claimed the Children on Horses title and Jason Foley won the Junior division at Fontainebleau, France.
Williams was riding the 11-year-old gelding CES Cruson, owned by John and Marie Burke. The combination held their own on the international stage, a clear round in the final round meant they were the only combination to finish on a score of zero. Williams took gold, while German riders claimed silver and bronze.
Williams was also part of the silver medal winning Children on Horse team. He joined forces with Sarah Fitzgerald, Lucy Morto, Ciaran Foley and Isobel Hughes Kennedy on Wednesday to finish second on the podium.
Junior champion
On Sunday Jason Foley won the Junior (under 18) Show Jumping Championship. Foley rode the Martin Egan-owned Irish Sport Horse Castlefield Vegas. Going into the final Foley knew he had a fence in hand to claim gold. He picked up four faults but keep his cool to leave the rest of the poles in place to win. Kate Derwin put in a great performance to secure fourth place.
Speaking to the Irish Horse about the achivements of Ireland’s future stars, Irish Youth team manager James Kernan said: “It was a great week for Irish riders who showed their true talents.” Kearan also thanked all those who supported the teams and made the trip such a success.
