Previous Grand National winners Minella Times and Tiger Roll were the standout names among a list of 104 horses who had their weights allotted for the Randox Grand National this week.
The weights were announced at a ceremony in Liverpool on Tuesday, and the picture for the 174th renewal of the famous race now has a clearer look.
Minella Times helped to create history for Rachael Blackmore, who became the first female rider to win the National last year. His allotted mark of 161 is 15lbs higher than the rating he competed off in the race last season and means he looks set to carry a weight of 11st 4lb for his double attempt.
His trainer Henry de Bromhead said: “He loves it around Aintree and certainly did last year. He’s been a little bit off form recently but he looks like he’s coming back to form and hopefully he will by April.
“They certainly have to enjoy it to do well around Aintree and hopefully going back will help him find his form.”
Tiger Roll became the first horse since Red Rum in the 1970s to win back-to-back Nationals when he won in 2018 and 2019. COVID-19 restrictions scuppered his hat-trick bid in 2020 and connections opted not to run in the race last season.
If they opt to run this time, like Minella Times, Tiger Roll has a mark of 161, and would carry 11st 5lb. That rating is just 2lbs higher than his second win in 2019.
His trainer Gordon Elliott said: “Tiger Roll is in very good form at home. We have been training him for Cheltenham all season and we are really looking forward to going back there. We will see how Cheltenham goes, but he has got a nice weight so the Grand National could be on the agenda.”
In all, exactly half of the 104 entries are Irish-trained with last year’s unlucky third Any Second Now, current Gold Cup second favourite Galvin and recent impressive Irish Gold Cup winner Conflated among the most notable horses that could take their chance.
