Another Irish classic weekend and another one that belonged to Ger Lyons and Colin Keane. Having each secured their maiden classic success with Siskin in the Irish 2000 Guineas earlier this season, the pair quickly combined for a second with Even So, who stayed on strongly to win the Juddmonte Irish Oaks on Saturday.
The daughter of Camelot travelled well for Keane, and only had the favourite Cayenne Pepper to contend with inside the final furlong, where she pulled away to win by two lengths. In contrast to Siskin who was favourite, Even So was a 10/1 shot and Lyons admitted it was a lot easier to watch the race.
“It was far more enjoyable to watch,” he said. “I didn’t take my eyes off her for the whole race and I was never in much doubt. I didn’t think she was good enough to win but she earned the right to be in the race when she won the Oaks Trial at Naas.”
Interestingly, earlier in the season, Even So was beaten by her stablemate Lemista in a listed contest at Naas and that filly had won again before taking Sunday’s feature Group 2 Kilboy Estate Stakes. This time she was running the colours of American owner Peter M Brant, powering home on the outside for Keane again. This has been a breakout season for Lyons’ Co Meath yard. Next week Siskin will run in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, so there is plenty more to look forward to.
Ken Condon was the other big story of the weekend, scoring a remarkable double on Saturday. The Curragh-based trainer saw his star Romanised return with an impressive win in the Group 2 Minstrel Stakes before later sending out 66/1 shot Laws Of Indices to win the Railway Stakes.
On Saturday Enable will go for a third win in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes but may face as many as six Aidan O’Brien-trained horses. The chief Ballydoyle chance could be Magical, who will renew rivalry with her old foe.
Magical has never beaten Enable but looked as good as ever on her comeback run in the Pretty Polly Stakes, in slight contrast to Enable who was beaten in the Eclipse at Sandown.
