When did you set up your business and why?
I started my business nearly two years ago while on maternity leave with my third child.
I had been working as a children's designer in the same job for a long time and I was ready for a change.
I had always pictured myself starting a brand of my own and it felt like a good time!
Can you explain your process?
I have always loved conversational prints and clothes that tell a story.
My inspiration comes from my kids and their general everyday madness at home.
The tone of the brand is a little bit weird and funny. I spent years designing kids’ clothes and I would always find myself saying “I would wear this”, so I had to do matching adult styles!
Banana Berry is designed by me in Dublin and made ethically in Portugal. I use organic cotton for each style, so everything is comfortable, fun and easy to wear.
What is your best-seller?
I recently launched Banana Berry's first baby product. It was made from the leftover fabric of the 'Squiggle Sweater'. It has had such a brilliant reaction so, hopefully, it's the first of many baby products!
What is it about your business that brings you joy?
I have learned so many new skills from starting my own business. I have gone from being a designer to also being an average photographer, a bad accountant and an overworked social media manager to name only a few new job titles!
But jokes aside, I love the challenge and I am never bored!
What are your hopes for the next year?
I hope to bring new designs, new products and a pop-up or two! I hope to do some collaborations to help the business grow!
What advice would you give to another start-up business?
I would say go for it! If you don't try you will never know. You will learn so much in the process about yourself, not to mention a tonne of new skills! It feels good to try something new and get out of your comfort zone! You will never be bored!
