Tuesday’s sale at Fermoy Mart saw another firm cattle trade. Mart manager Sean Leahy said supply of cattle is on par with last year, but the trade is holding more firm. All forward feeding cattle continue to be a strong trade, as do cull cows.
Angus cattle are still being met with strong demand. Prices are ranging mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.10/kg for all good-quality stores over 500kg. Sean said lighter types around 400kg are still making up to €2.20/kg where the quality of those on offer is good.
He said there was good demand for forward Friesian bullocks also, and these sold mainly from €1.80/kg to €2.00/kg for top-quality types. Light Hereford bullocks and heifers were a strong trade also, with those around 280kg making from €600 to €650.
Although cow numbers are small at the mart currently, demand continues to be very strong. Friesian cull cows are selling mainly from €1.15/kg at the bottom of the market to €1.60/kg for better-quality feeding cows.
The majority of Friesian store cows made from €250 to €350 along with the weight. Commission rates for adult cattle are seller pays 1.5% with a minimum of €9.50/head, buyer €9/head.
