A solid showing of cull cows met with good demand from feeders and factory agents in Portumna Mart on Wednesday morning.

The majority of cows (approximately two-thirds) were Friesian- and Jersey-crosses, with the remainder being continental suckler types.

Average price across the board sat at a strong €2.85/kg, with better-type cows with good fleshing or younger cows with frame selling in the main from €2.70/kg to €2.95/kg.

Poorer-quality cows lacking flesh or those with Jersey genes sold in the main from €2.00/kg upwards.

The small showing of continental-type cows met with the keenest demand, with the majority of these lots grossing over €3/kg, though more store-type lots sold back to €2.85/kg.

Top call on a price-per-kilo basis was a 2021-born Limousin cow weighing 705kg that sold for €2,920 (€4.14/kg), while the overall top price went to a 2017-born Limousin-cross cow weighing 805kg that sold for €3,100 (€3.85/kg).

In the weanling ring, heifer weanlings from 200kg to 300kg averaged €4.44/kg, with the top third averaging €4.60/kg, while heifers in the bottom third sold to €4.23/kg. Heifers between 400kg and 500kg averaged €4.02/kg, with the top and bottom third circa 50c/kg above or below this price.
