A flying trade for heifer weanlings was the standout at Roscommon Mart’s weanling show and sale on Tuesday evening.

The vibrant trade was underpinned by the quality of cattle on offer, with average prices for the top third of animals trending 40c/kg to 50c/kg above the normal range.

The top third of prices for over 130 heifers weighing from 300kg to 400kg averaged at €6.83/kg, with a dozen heifers selling above €7/kg including the top price per kilo of €12.38/kg paid for a smashing 315kg Limousin-cross heifer.

Farmers and specialist in-calf heifer producers clashed with beef finishers for any heifers exhibiting a combination of colour and good conformation, with a selection of roan-coloured heifers selling particularly sharply.

The average price was recorded at €5.83/kg, with the bottom third selling for €5/kg within a price range of €4.65/kg to €5.33/kg.

It was a similar trend for about 80 lighter lots weighing from 200kg to 300kg, with prices averaging at €6.24/kg and ranging from an average of €5.34/kg for the bottom third of animals to €7.23/kg for the top third.

A small selection of heifers weighing in excess of 400kg averaged €6.53/kg.

There was a strong entry of over 320 bulls on offer, with prices possibly more variable than heifers due to a wider differential in quality and a higher-percentage of plainer-quality types appearing as the season progresses.

Saying this, the trade was sharp for any quality bulls with export buyers, specialist bull beef finishers and beef farmers all active.

Over 60% of bulls were in the 300kg to 400kg weight bracket. The top third recorded a fine average of €6.70/kg, with the best-quality lots rising to as high as €8/kg-plus. The average price was recorded at €5.92/kg, with the bottom third selling on average for €5.25/kg.

Lighter bulls recorded a higher price per kilo, with farmer buyers driving the trade for such bulls.

The top third of bulls sold for €7/kg, with the average price at €6.30/kg and bottom third at €5.59/kg. Bulls weighing 400kg to 450kg averaged at €5.43/kg, with the top third at €6.07/kg and the bottom third at €4.81/kg. Prices for heavier bulls followed a similar trend, with prices 20c/kg lower.

Mart manager Tony Conry said: “The positive trade has added much more optimism to suckler farming with farmers rewarded for producing top-quality stock.”
