Numbers on offer at Castlerea Mart on Thursday held steady, with a good increase in the number of beef-sired calves on offer the last few weeks.
Like the rest of the country, prices have eased on where the market started in January, but better-bred beef calves from continental sires are still commending north of €500.
The general run for Angus-cross bull calves under 50kg was from €150 up to €250. Calves over 50kg sold from €250 up to €400, with calves over 60kg selling to a top of €530.
Angus-cross heifers under 50kg sold from €160 to €220, with 50kg to 60kg selling from €240 to €340 and a good entry of heifer calves over 60kg selling to a strong demand of €470 upwards. A number of entries over 80kg making up to €630/head.
Sticking with traditional-bred calves, a good entry of Hereford-cross calves was on offer, with calves from 50kg to 60kg making €250 to €400, with calves over 60kg selling to a top of €600.
Big entry
There was a big entry of Belgian Blue-cross calves to choose from, with calves 50kg and under making from €200 to €400/head, while a large number of calves weighing over 50kg sold from €400 to €700.
Friesian-cross bull calves continue to meet strong demand, with calves from 45kg to 60kg selling from €200 to €300, with a number of calves over 60kg commanding up to €320/head.
A small entry of Charolais calves sold from €550 to €580, while a similar entry of Limousin-cross calves sold from €300 to €600.
There was a number of Shorthorn-cross calves on offer weighing around the 60kg mark and they sold from €270 to €340.

This six-week-old Hereford-cross heifer weighed 75kg and sold for €600.
This one-month-old Limousin-cross bull weighed 80kg and sold for €600.
These two-month-old Charolais-cross heifers weighed 75kg and sold for €550.
