The average price paid for an R grade bullock has dropped by 40c/kg since the start of the year at Irish meat plants, Bord Bia’s Joe Burke has said.

The meat and livestock sector manager said that this is a decline of around 5%.

“Really, that isn’t as a result of oversupply. Our supplies are down by about 60,000 [head] for the year to date or about 15%, so really it’s a reflection of the market conditions,” he said.

“The demand has been a good bit slower and disappointingly around our major markets,” he said, including the UK.
