A new record price for the Carrick Winter Fair has been set by the Davis family, Williamstown, Co Galway, for their superb Belgian Blue heifer Polar Bear.

The heifer had been much admired throughout the weekend, with anticipation high around the show ring as she entered.

Opening at €10,000, she rose in rapid succession in €1,000 bids up to €32,000, with three more bids of €500 required to secure the heifer for the ringside buyer.

Sired by Progressive Genetics Tropique, her maternal grandsire is Du Grand Bon Dieu (BB2247), which was off a purebred Limousin cow herself.

Polar Bear took second place in her class at Sunday’s pre-sale show, but vindicated herself by taking the Progressive Genetics and Munster Bovine future champions calf extravaganza.

The blue and white heifer collected a host of championships and red rosettes for the family throughout the summer, including wins in Tullamore Show and the commercial champion sash in Castlerea, Swinford and Claremorris.
