Bluetongue vaccination rules are not being properly implemented when cattle are imported here, the Department of Agriculture has warned.
France has had 2,500 bluetongue outbreaks since 2015.
“There has been some evidence in recent times of animals being imported into Ireland from bluetongue restricted zones, where the timing of vaccination did not appear to be sufficient to ensure immunity,” the Department told the Irish Farmers Journal.
The Department advises farmers not to import cattle from BT-restricted areas and not to buy recently imported animals without careful checks.
