The carcase of a calf was discovered dumped in a Coillte forest in Co Donegal at the weekend.

The calf was dumped at the forest in Cronalaghey, near Killygordon in the county. It is the second incident of animal dumping in the area in the last two months.

Michael McGlinchey, a local man, who came across the carcase said the person who disposed of the carcass should “get out of farming”.

“Would the scumbag that dumped this calf in the forest at Cronalaghey come back and lift it. If you can’t afford the €40 or so to send it away properly, get out of farming cause clearly you are no good at it [sic],” McGlinchey said.

Fianna Fáil councillor for the area Patrick McGowan told the Irish Farmers Journal that this is the latest issue in the area in recent months where dead animals have been dumped after seven sheep and a bag of veterinary products were found in December.

“The sheep and veterinary products were found not so far away from the same place.

“This weekend I received a call from a person walking in the woods to say that a dead calf was dumped. I reported it to the litter warden and to Coillte,” he said, as Coillte owns the land where the calf was dumped.

“If this is to continue, it’s very concerning. There are animal welfare issues here. We do know that there are isolated incidents, but there would be trouble if it was to continue,” he added, saying that he has notified the Department of Agriculture and the Gardaí.

Sheep dumped

Last month seven sheep were discovered in the Meenagoland, Killygordon, area and did not have any tags.

At the time McGowan said that the farmer who dumped the sheep was likely local to the area.

“It’s a real cowboy act and I’m hearing similar reports in recent months,” he said.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told the Irish Farmers Journal: “Gardaí received report of sheep carcases having been dumped in a forest area in Killygordon, Co Donegal on 11 December 2020.

“The matter was referred to the Department of Agriculture.

“Gardaí are investigating criminal damage that was caused to a gate in the area on this date. Enquiries are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
