Kanturk Mart hosted its September special weanling sale this week, with prices rising as high as €3.71/kg.

Securing the top price was a nine-month-old Limousin bull weanling from Kiskeam-based James O’Connor. Weighing in at 350kg he sold for €1,300.

This January 2020-born Angus heifer weighed 430kg and sold for €800 (€1.86/kg).

Speaking following the sale, mart manager Seamus O’Keeffe said: “It was a great sale all round, with great competition ringside and online.”

It was indeed a great sale with nearly a full clearance of the 468 animals on offer.

This Charolais heifer born November 2019 weighed 390kg and sold for €1,410 (€3.62/kg).

While €3.71/kg was the top price, it was far from the stand-out, as a number of other notable prices followed.

In the heifer section, a 10-month-old Charoalis heifer weighing 390kg sold for €1,410 or €3.62/kg.

Champion of the show went to Timothy Francis Buckley with his Limousin bull weighing 370kg who later in the day sold for €1,000 (€2.70/kg).

This Hereford bull born February 2020 weighed 355kg and sold for €750 (€2.11/kg).

Standing reserve overall was a Simmental weighing 370kg to sold for €810.

Traditional breeds also proved in demand, with three well-made Angus bulls weighing 350kg selling for €2.43/kg (€850). Top of the Herefords was a bull weighing 355kg, which sold for €750 (€2.11/kg).

This Simmental bull born January 2020 was reserve champion at the sale, weighed 370kg and sold for €810 (€2.19/kg).

The champion pen of bull weanlings went to six Limousins with an average weight of 307kg. These sold for an impressive €2.60/kg.

The final prize awarded was for best pen of heifers which went to a group of four Charolais weighing 307kg and sold for €2.41/kg.

This Limouisn born December 2019 weighed 350kg and sold for €1,300 (€3.71/kg).

Overall, a strong trade throughout, with top-end cattle in very high demand.
