‘Young people have the power to influence the agricultural sector'

“I am 22 and just completed college at SETU [South East Technological University] Waterford. I have a strong interest in sports, playing basketball in and outside of college and am always keen to get involved in new things which is probably why I ended up competing for the Great Agri-Food debate team.

“Compared to most of the debate team, I am not from an agriculture background although I was driven with a passion for food and nutrition as well as maintaining quality standards in the food industry. I have just finished four years in college studying a BSc in Food Science and Innovation recently in May and I still can’t believe how fast college has flown by.”

The role young people play in agriculture

“Young people play a huge role in agriculture ranging from farmers and entrepreneurs to becoming scientists and educators. Young people have the power to influence the agricultural sector through their choices, encouraging environmentally friendly farming practices and contribute to the growth of local agricultural economies.

“This involvement is necessary for the sustainable development of the agricultural sector and the creation of a more resilient and food-secure future.”

Challenges to the industry

“The agri-food industry faces challenges that impact sustainability and the ability to meet global food demands. Addressing arising issues with global food security while ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and affordable food is one of the main challenges.

"In addition, with concerns of global warming, agriculture is vulnerable to the effects of climate change and climate change mitigation is needed urgently.”

Red meat perceptions

“To improve and change the consumers’ negative perceptions of red meat I believe more education and communication is needed on the current innovation, sustainability, ethical practices and research and development being carried out to inform consumers of red meat to avoid misconceptions. Focusing on providing accurate information, addressing sustainability concerns, and offering choices that align with consumer values can change negative perceptions.”

Debating

“To be completely honest I wouldn’t have gotten into debating only for Rachel O’Dowd, who I must say is very persuasive. She was very keen to have a diverse debate team from different courses and was very passionate in enticing people to apply for the team.

“I am so glad I did because I’ve learnt a lot from debating about agriculture and sustainability within the agri-sector. From debating, it has also built confidence through public speaking and provided an opportunity to meet some ''comedic characters'' - one might say - on the team. This competition has taught me a lot, especially how exciting debating can be watching people argue their points passionately and the research and background effort gone into each debate in the weeks leading up to the competition being showcased on the day.”

Opportunities in the sector

“There are so many opportunities on offer in the agricultural industry through advancements in technology, sustainable agriculture and in innovation that can lead to economic growth, food security and to support farming communities.”

The next step

“Currently, I am working in a food and beverage industry company in quality labs which I would like to continue to work in this area to ensure that food products meet quality and safety standards and regulatory compliance.”
