Taking the overall show champion at Crossmolina was a yearling commercial heifer from the Flatley brothers of Kilkelly, Co. Mayo. The April 2015 heifer held off stiff competition from pedigree breeds in the championship line up to be crowned show champion by judge Pat Fallaly.

This marked a great debut for the Simmental cross Limousin heifer who is sired by well-known AI sire Curaheen Apostle. She was purchased by the Flatley brothers at the fat stock in Carrick-on-Shannon last winter.

The brothers also came up triumphant in the Simmental ring with Lakeview Gramy. Sired by Anatrim Bodybuilder, Gramy was purchased last April and secured the reserve championship at Erris last week on her first outing. Reserve honours in the Simmental ring went to the Neenan brothers with Fearna Gracious. Sired by Curaheen Vio the yearling heifer is out of homebred show cow Fearna Tiffany.

First time showing

In the Charolais ring, the three month old Ballinagrocy Martina secured the overall championship ahead of a strong entry of older cattle. Sired by Rancard and out of a home bred dam, she was bred by local breeder Mattie Herrick. Exhibiting Martina for Mattie was Nigel Woods who also secured top spot in the young handlers on his first day showing an animal.

Reserve in the Charolais went to Riverglore Firby from James McHugh, Cahir Kiltimagh, Co. Mayo. This homebred Roundhill Cameron daughter is no stranger to success having won secured overall in Erris last weekend.

Angus ring

Securing another championship in the Angus ring was Michael and Grainne Horan, Coolcran, Co. Mayo. Taking the overall was Coolcran Francis who is sired by old AI KBJ Jetta. She was shown with calf at foot by Aughnomona Jimmy who also secured a first prize in his class.

Taking up the reserve spot was Ballina champion Dunlaveymore Marley. Sired by Bohey Jasper the December born bull was exhibited by Michael and Ray Gallagher, Charlestown Mayo.

Rathooragh Lula came out triumphant in the Limousin ring. Bred and exhibited by the Maughn family this stylish young heifer was sired by Ardea Dan. While in reserve position was Lisbrin Karl from Sean Tighe, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. Sired by Malida, he goes back on a Ronick Hawk dam.

Double win

In the Shorthorn ring it was a double win for Peter Gormley of the Gortnadrass herd. Securing the top spot was four year old cow Whiterose, sired by Kilkelly Major. Taking the reserve position was her seven month old calf Crystal sired by Killian Winstone. The outfit will now take on Bonniconlon this Monday where last year Whiterose’s bull calf secured the Connaught championship.

In the small blue turnout it was Sean Burkes Adajio son Rathlacker Jake who came out on top. Born September 2015 the calf has already secured championships at Cornadulla, Ballina and Erris.

Peader Feerick, Ballinrobe took the commercial championship with his homebred Belgian Blue bullock. Sired by a stock bull and out of a Simmental cow, the family also won it here last year with him as a bull calf.
