After the heavy rain last week, drying wind and sunshine have allowed field work to recommence in Tipperary.

Dry soils are now in perfect condition for completing autumn reseeding.

The field in the photographs was power-harrowed on Friday. On Saturday, the field was rolled and three bags of 10:10:20 applied before it was power-harrowed again and the seed dropped in.

John Tynan is driving a John Deere 6175R using a Corvus power harrow from IAM Machinery sourced from Breens in Cashel, and an APV 300 seed box that drops the seed in behind the harrow.

Anna Mooney is rolling the freshly tilled ground with seeds almost immediately after the seeds have been dropped in.

The seed mix is a Liffey Mills Sweet Sward mix that has 50:50 tetraploid and diploid varieties. The tetraploid varieties are Abergain and AstonEnergy. The diploid varieties are Drumbo and Aberchoice. It is fair to say all are well-proven varieties that score well on the variety indices.

Clover

There is 0.5kg of clover in the mix and the clover varieties are Coolfin (0.36kg) and Barblanca (0.14kg). Coolfin is a medium-leaved white clover bred by Teagasc. Barblanca is a large leaf white clover from Barenburg.

In the past, some farmers had trouble with large leaf white clovers taking over the sward so you have to be careful how much large leaf seed you include. As you can see in this mix, there is more of the medium leaf clover which is what you want.

John works with Gerry Ryan Contractors, Borrisoleigh. The grass seeds are a mix from Liffey Mills Sweet Sward mixture - Abergain, Aberchoice, AstonEnergy, Drumbo with 0.5kg of Coolfin and Barblanca white clover. John is using a Corvus power harrow with an APV seed box.

The beauty of getting grass seeds in now before it gets too late in the autumn is that you might get a chance to graze and perhaps spray for weeds before the winter. Many farmers down south will continue to reseed right up into October but reseeding too late reduces the window for new seed aftercare which is vitally important. Spraying for weeds and grazing early are vital to establish a strong sward for 2020.
