Everyone knows that weekends were made for lighting the fire, propping up the feet and flicking on the telly. However, masses of channels and TV guide grids can make it difficult to find something substantial to watch. Never fear, Irish Country Living is here with helpful hints on what to watch this weekend.

DERRY GIRLS

Most likely, news of this comical TV show will have filtered through to you by now. If not, you’re missing out. Those of you in need of a laugh won’t regret it. Tonight, Thursday 1 February, the fifth episode of the first series of Derry Girls will air on Channel 4 at 10pm. Based in, you guessed it, Derry, the series follows the trials and tribulations of a group of teenage girls. Writer Lisa McGee has done a magnificent job in capturing the spirit of Derry, and with absolute hilarity. You can also catch up with earlier episodes online on Channel 4’s “on demand” service.

THE VOICE UK

The seventh series of this hit show is currently on our screens and is proving to be excellent entertainment. Showing Saturday nights on ITV at 8pm and on TV3 at 10pm, The Voice UK is the perfect way to pass a Saturday night in. This year’s judges are Will.i.am, who has held his backwards seat since the show’s inception; American singer Jennifer Hudson; Sir Tom Jones; and Olly Murs, who is no stranger to singing competitions.

DANCING WITH THE STARS

It’s time to put on your dancing shoes this Sunday, for RTÉ’s hit TV show Dancing with the Stars (pictured above). Now in week five, the competition is heating up in earnest and with two celebrities already voted off, everyone is putting their best foot forward in vying for a place. Full of glitter and glam, this programme is sure to end your weekend on a good note. Dancing with the Stars airs on RTÉ 1 at 6.30pm on Sunday 4 February.

TAITHÍ GAN TEORAINN

A new TG4 programme, Taithí Gan Teorainn, follows eight Irish people as they get to experience the equivalent of their profession in a different country. From fashion designers to nurses and Finland to Kenya, this eclectic mix proves for excellent viewing. The fourth installment airs this Sunday night on TG4 at 8.30pm.
