Equine influenza has been found on five premises in Leinster and Munster, affecting breeding stock, racing and competition horses. The Irish Equine Centre released an alert in relation to the outbreak highlighting clinical signs and the testing options available. Clinical signs include coughing, nasal discharge, swollen glands and fever. These signs have been recorded in horses who are vaccinated against flu and horses who are not vaccinated.

The virus has not been recorded in Ireland since 2010 but there has been an increase in recorded outbreaks across Europe. Three outbreaks of the viruses were also diagnosed in Britain.
The first two Irish yards (a thoroughbred stud farm and a show jumping yard) confirmed with outbreaks both have strong links to the continent.
Testing for equine influenza is provided free of charge by the Irish Equine Centre. This service is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
