Farming and contracting near Ballindaggan in Co Wexford, father-and-son duo Rossi and Andy Nolan run a herd of suckler cows, finishing all cattle. They also grow cereals, alongside maize. The contracting side of the business spans to include silage and maize harvesting, dung and lime spreading, loading straw and tillage works.
The Nolans took delivery of their first JCB loader back in 1994, which was a 412s. They subsequently upgraded loaders in 2002, 2007 and 2011, for a new 412s each time. In 2017, they bought a new 413 and upgraded this machine again in 2022.
“We’re very fond of the JCB loaders, they have performed very well for us over the years. With the exception of the 2011 machine, which was when JCB moved from Perkins to its own engine, it gave us some engine trouble.
“We did consider a Volvo around that time, but never moved. Aside from that engine trouble, the JCB loaders have been very much trouble-free. We tend to put in the region of 1,400 to 1,500 hours on the loader each year. Nothing lasts forever, to keep things reliable, we like to upgrade after around 7,000 hours, give or take,” explained Rossi.

The 413s is equipped with the Command Plus cab.
Engine and transmission
The JCB 413s Agri features a JCB diesel max 4.8l engine, churning out 150hp of power, which is up 4% the previous 413s. It also packs 600Nm of torque, which is up 7% on the previous model.
This is coupled to a six-speed ZF transmission, which puts the power onto the ground and features a top speed of 48km/h. Alongside limited slip differential (LSD) axles, the transmission can be operated in automatic mode, with either first or second gear used for yard work and silage duties. Weighing in at 8,953kg, the loader is kitted out with a 10ft fork for maize and silage work, which the Nolans reckon is a good size for the 413s.
Cab
The 413s is equipped with the Command Plus cab, which the Nolans are very fond of. They particularly remarked on the brilliant visibility from the operator seat. It features a simple, clean control layout, with all switches on the right-hand pillar. A full LCD colour screen terminal is placed at operator eye level. The loader is fitted with a rear-view camera.
A second LCD screen displays machine functions such as engine rpm, forward speed, gear etc.
The loader comes with full specification and is equipped with the complete LED lighting package, in-cab cooler, electric mirrors, electric parking brake, reversing camera and a Lincoln auto greaser.

Verdict
“We are really happy with the 413s. It’s nimble enough to clean out sheds and feed cattle over the winter, but has enough torque and weight to keep grass pushed up and rolled from a self-propelled harvester. Our latest 413s is very responsive with the hydraulics. It features a single variable displacement hydraulic pump, delivering 156l/min flow. We cannot fault the power, the hydraulics or the transmission, and the cab is an ideal operator environment. We would like to see ourselves trading it for a new 413s in the next two years,” said Rossi.
