DAERA has put in place a housing order for all kept birds and poultry, as well as a ban on gatherings, from Thursday 6 November due to the risk of incursion of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or bird flu.

A similar housing order comes into play in the Republic of Ireland from Monday 10 November. It comes after suspect cases of avian influenza at two commercial poultry premises near Pomeroy and Lisnaskea were uncovered in recent days.

A temporary control zone was put in place around the Pomeroy unit on Sunday, with the same action taken at the Lisnaskea site on Monday. This site is understood to contain turkeys.

Over 3,000 turkeys have also been culled on a Carlow farm due to an outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu.

The recent cases follow on from a confirmed outbreak on a broiler breeder unit outside Omagh in early October.

Commenting on the latest situation, DAERA chief vet Brian Dooher urged all flock keepers to take action to improve biosecurity on farms.
