Three people lost their lives on NI farms during 2025 as a result of workplace accidents, the Health and Safety Executive for NI (HSENI) has confirmed.

The total number of fatal farm accidents in NI last year compares to five farm deaths in 2024 and six fatalities in 2023.

Figures from HSENI indicate that over the past 10 years, there have been 51 fatal accidents on NI farms.

A spokesperson for HSENI said tractors and farm machinery were involved in all three of the farm fatalities that occurred in NI during 2025.

The spokesperson also confirmed that two of three incidents last year involved older farmers aged over 60.

HSENI is planning to launch a campaign later this month which aims to raise awareness of farm safety among older farmers, encouraging them to farm wiser to farm longer.

“The campaign will focus on the importance of older farmers adapting the ways in which they work as they get older to keep themselves safe and will highlight alternative approaches to common work activities,” the spokesperson said.

HSENI is also reminding farmers of all ages that slurry, animals, falls and equipment, which spell the acronym “SAFE”, remain the key risk areas for those living and working on farms.

“As always, any work should be carefully planned with vehicles and equipment regularly maintained,” the HSENI spokesperson said.
