The Irish Aberdeen Angus Association held its annual calf show in the new venue of Carrick-on-Shannon over the weekend. The change of venue helped to facilitate breeders from the North, who for the first time were allowed show at the well-established event. This made this year’s event one of the few all-island shows. There were just under 70 cattle on show, split over 10 classes with €5,000 of prize money up for grabs.

There was intense competition in the senior and junior stockperson classes with John Smyth from Oldcastle, Co Meath, clinching the senior stockperson award while the junior stockperson prize went to Zara Sheahan from Mohill, Co Leitrim.

Judge Alwyn Armour of the Woodvale herd had a busy five hours of judging after which he declared Mogeely Memo owned by Albert and Jennifer DeCogan from Cork the overall male champion. This bull is sired by Wall Royal Leo and out of the duo’s highly successful show cow Mogeely Miylo. Memo claimed numerous prizes at shows this summer, including the junior championship at the all-Irelands back in June as well as Munster bull calf of the year.

Close on Memo’s heels to claim the reserve male championship was Tom Reynolds’ bull Knockadrinan Blackboy. This March 2017 Mogeely Joe-sired bull is out of Knockadrinan Blackbird.

The overall female champion was the January 2017-born Drumbeeera Lady Thatcher. This stylish young heifer is sired by Bova Lord Blackwood and owned by Thomas F Beirne, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. This heifer has won a number of top accolades at local shows. The reserve senior female champion title was secured by Eustace and Deirdre Burke, Co Cork, with Clontead J Patriot. This September 2016 heifer is sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg and out of Goulding J Patriot. This calf has been a regular at local shows and was awarded the Munster show heifer calf of the year.
