Saturday was a day James Mullarkey and family won't forget for a long time, as they achieved the highest price of €22,000 at the Irish Simmental Cattle Society's Premier show and sale in Roscommon Mart.

They had just claimed the overall junior male champion at the show.

Doing the business for the Sligo-based herd was Ardtarmon Troy, a January 2025-born son of Lissadell Mr Mularkey Vip, while his dam, Ardtarmon Pamela, is a daughter of Auroch deuter Pp going back to Ballinalare Farm Honey.

A heterozygous polled bull, Troy also carries a fantastic set of indexes, ranking in the top 20% of the breed across terminal, replacement and dairy-beef.

Taking him back to Co Antrim was the Robson family to run with their renowned Kilbride Farm herd.

Overall, trade in the bull section was relatively strong, as 17 out of the 28 bulls on offer traded to an average of €6,411, up almost €500 on last year's sale.

Demand was fierce in the females, as 20 out of the 23 heifers in attendance exchanged hands, selling to an average of €4,295.

Polled bull

Achieving the joint second highest price of the day was Glanville Setanta PP, a full polled bull from Sean Larkin in Co Galway.

Just 15-months-old, this dark red bull is a son of Dimanean Telstar and Glanville Parada P, a successful show heifer sired by Woodhall Ferrari P.

Displaying an impressive spread of figures and a carcase weight figure 27.5kg, he was the choice lot of Vincent Keane in Co Galway.

Matching him at the same price was the second-prize winner Thornford Trojan P. Bred and exhibited by Declan and Ryan Callan in Co Monaghan, this stylish January 2025-born bull is out of Curaheen Gunshot P and a Kilbride Farm Gernot 15 bred dam, which descends from a long line of Seafort females.

Dark red and heterozygous polled, he came to auction with a five-star terminal index of €100 along with a four-star replacement index of €156 and boasted a carcase weight figure of 28.8kg.

He will now join John Withers herd in Lisburn, Co Antrim.

Nigel Hogan from Co Carlow was next best in the prices with the overall senior male champion, Rathnashan Shaggy at €7,800.

Bred from the Curaheen Drifter ET bred cow, Coose Missy, his sire is Coose Lincoln ET, stock bull at the Islavale herd in Scotland.

He also came with a well-balanced set of indexes which included a calving figure of just 3.1% on beef heifers. Snapping up this October 2024-born bull was John Lawler from Co Kilkenny.

Marsha Shelby rocked his way to €7,200, selling to Mary O'Halloran's pedigree fold in Co Tipperary.

Bred by Michael Glennon in Co Roscommon, he is a son of Sheestown Tsar, while his dam, Tulla Bridy, goes back to Celtic Starbuck and Star Hugo.

Females

Topping the female trade at €7,000 was the second-prize winner Leeherd Sweet Jasmine 487.

The property of John Finnegan in Co Cork, this December 2024-born heifer caught the eye of many around the ring with her style and femininity, most of all her buyer, Alan Clarke from Co Galway.This Alchester Kracker 19 bred heifer goes back to Anatrim Dubai and Curaheen Vio ET.

Like many of the high sellers, she carries a terminal index value in the top 20% of the breed along with a whopping carcase weight figure of 29.7kg.

Retailing at €5,500 was Glynwood Truffle, brought out by Liam Connell from Co Westmeath. Sired by the in-vogue Lissadell Mr Mularkey Vip ET, her dam, Glynwood Jane, is a daughter of Seepa Fionn going back to Curaheen Tyson ET.

Just one-year-old, this flashy young heifer boasted a terrific set of figures and was the pick of Donal Bourke in Co Tipperary.

John Brady from Co Mayo picked up the overall champion female with Rabawn Tiara, a rising one-year-old daughter of Auchorachan Hercules 16 ET. Out of Rabawn Jazzy, she combined some of the breeds greats in Kilbride Farm Dragoon and Banwy T-Rex. Securing this four-star terminal heifer was Barry Fleming in Co Kildare.
