Comment: IFA national pigs committee chair Pat O’Flaherty said Irish pig prices are lagging 5% behind the EU average prices, as reported to the EU Commission week beginning 4 July.

Although prices have improved in recent months, it must be noted that the average margin over feed for January to July is only 35c/kg (15c/kg below breakeven), indicating producers still have a long way to go to return to profits.

Across the continent, Spain, France and the Netherlands achieved moderate increases. Based on market trends, a price increase is justified for Irish farmers this Friday.

Prices above those quoted are already offered at the beginning of the week, which is a positive sign.
