Darren Hession is one of those young people that seem to have been around forever despite their youthful age.

What started out as a summer job in Tuam Mart has now developed into a full-time career for the Galway-based auctioneer, which sees him selling everything from hoggets to sport horses to houses.

In the podcast, Darren, who won the IPAV Rostrum Competition in 2022, discusses his career progression.

As a child, he watched two Tuam Mart stalwarts Pat Devane and Pat Dermody selling in the ring before going on to work with both.

When the urge came to pursue a career in auctioneering, mart manager Marian Devane took Darren under her wing and following his studies and tutelage from a host of auctioneers, including another Tuam Mart legend Pat Burke, Darren is now a regular face on the rostrum in marts throughout Connacht and further afield.

In recent years, Goffs and Goresbridge came calling, with Darren have progressed from a bid spotter to an auctioneer, with the Turloughmore man also having several French sales chalked up to boot. If all the above wasn’t enough, Darren is also on the road each week selling property and land with auctioneer David Moggans.
