A landmark Co Louth property belonging to the late Edward Haughey, later Lord Ballyedmond, has gone on sale this week with a guide price of €4.1m.

Dungooley Lodge is located in Dungooley, north Co Louth. Development work began on the property a number of years ago.

The property, along with surrounding land on 256ac, belonged to Edward Haughey, who was killed in a helicopter crash in March 2014. He was one of the richest men in the country. He was founder of Norbrook Laboratories, the biggest privately owned pharmaceutical company in the world, based in Newry, Co Down.

The property is being sold by his family. The selling agent, Best Estate Agent in Newry, is inviting offers until the end of September.

The house is said to be the largest built in over 100 years and the second biggest in Ireland, only surpassed by JP McManus' 40,000sqft property in Co Limerick.

Six lots

The house is a "shell building" with roof and glazing completed.

It extends to approximately 24,500sqft over two floors with a basement spanning to 2,580sqft. It features a drawing room, family room, library, breakfast room, dining room and kitchen with further accommodation for staff. These rooms have high ceilings and large sash windows offering views over the surrounding countryside.

According to the sale agent, "a unique glass dome and glass lantern feature impressively over the Main Hall flooding the grand entrance with natural light". Nine bedrooms, all en-suite, are located on the first floor with further dressing rooms, a study and a room for staff. The main bedroom features its own dressing room, en-suite, study and extensive balcony which offers outstanding views over the surrounding countryside.

The house and land is being sold in six lots and also comes with a Single Farm Payment entitlement.

  • Lot one includes Dungooley Lodge and 98ac and has a guide price of €1,850,000.
  • Lot two includes 9.91ac, which is currently sown out in winter cereals, and comes with a former dwelling and yard. This is priced at €215,000.
  • Lot three is a potential building site and 35ac. It benefits from a cattle handling facility, along with three fields and road frontage is being sold for €585,000.
  • Lot four is 70ac and includes a former dwelling and yard, priced at €950,000. The majority of these lands are in arable crops and grass with approximately 14ac planted out in forestry to the south, with a Forestry Grant from the Department of Agriculture.
  • Lot five is 35ac and consists of five fields planted in winter cereals and is priced at €495,000.
  • Lot six is 8.4ac located off the Dundalk/Armagh road. These lands are currently in grass, accessed via a shared laneway with Dundalk Motocross and priced at €60,000.
