It’s been an exceptionally busy December for Mullingar-based James L Murtagh Auctioneers, with an array of Co Westmeath farms going under the hammer in the weeks leading into Christmas.

Getting the ball rolling at a fierce pace was the auction of a 17ac parcel at Cummerstown, Collinstown, on Thursday 11 December.

Bidding opened at €180,000 and within two minutes it had climbed in increments of €10,000 to €260,000, whereby a short recess was taken.

Auctioneer Padraic Murtagh received instructions to place it on the market and a series of snappy €1,000 bids brought it to €265,000.

Another €5,000 was placed before a mix of €1,000 and €2,000 bids saw the hammer come down at €277,000 (€16,294/ac) less than five minutes after proceedings got under way.

Two holdings

The following day, Friday 12 December, saw two holdings of 27ac at Farra, Bunbrosna, and 6ac at Lynn, Mullingar, go to auction.

These had a much tamer pace, with the land at Bunbrosna withdrawn at €295,000 and the land at Lynn withdrawn at €172,000. Negotiations are ongoing for both properties.
