Greek sheep and goat farmers continue to count the cost of an outbreak of pox in their sheep and goat herds. Since mid-August 2024, almost 500,000 have been culled as the viral disease hit their flocks.

As a result of this, it is estimated that Feta cheese production could be back by 14% nationally. Where it really hits home is that the cheese made from sheep or goats’ milk is classed as a protected designations of origins (PDO) product within the EU, meaning Feta production is confined to some parts of Greece.

At present these are among the areas hardest hit with pox to the extent in some of the main Feta producing regions production could be halved this year.
