A strong mix of women and young people is being earmarked to drive a new organic sheep producer organisation that’s coming on stream in the west.

The Western Organic Producer Organisation Group is being launched next Thursday (5 March) in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport and the man driving the project is adamant that young farmers and women will be front and centre in the committee.

“The trend of new entrants to organics is more young farmers and more women farmers – they see the profit possibilities in organics – and the goal will be to have this reflected in the committee,” said Teagasc organic advisor John Noonan.

“I would love to see a committee with at least 50% women.”
