If you are struggling with your mental health over Christmas and you need someone to talk to, the Make the Moove helpline is operating over the festive period.

The helpline offers confidential support and guidance for individuals in farming and rural communities.

Past president of Macra - and Make the Moove volunteer - Elaine Hoolihan says that the helpline is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

“We are there to listen over the Christmas period because we know it’s a challenging time for some people and not always full of joy like everyone assumes.

"We are here to help and signpost people if they need additional help,” says Elaine.

“Traditionally, Christmas is one of our busiest periods, especially with rural isolation. Lots of people would just be ringing for a chat to be honest. People are feeling lonely.

"Everyone assumes Christmas is a time when you’re surrounded by family, but not everyone has a big family to be surrounded by. That’s why we encourage people to call in with their neighbours and family members to ensure they have people to talk to.”

Rotating shifts

The helpline is manned by three to four volunteers, who will be rotating shifts over the Christmas period.

Elaine, who is from Athlacca, Co Limerick, adds that: “Personally, Christmas is an opportunity for me to meet up with friends and family, while also having a break from my busy schedule as a sport physiotherapist.

“With my professional background in healthcare, I cannot stress enough to ensure to call into your neighbours, friends and family this festival season as everyone's Christmas is not filled with the same amount of hope and joy.”
